Our history

The story of Poseidon Gardens begins in the 1960s, when tourism, wellness, and longevity were still foreign words to this small island. But even then, Ischia’s thermal waters had long been considered the quintessence of health and well-being. As a result, more and more people began to come to the island’s famous spas to find healing and relaxation.

The sixties: Gernot Walde
Poseidon Gardens was founded in 1959 by the German doctor Gernot Walde. At the time, the bay of Citara was still farmland and the fields stretched all the way down to the beach. Walde was the first person to develop and realise the concept of a thermal garden on the island of Ischia. He had several pools built with connecting paths and named his new spa complex after Poseidon, the god of the sea.
The seventies: Ludwig Kuttner
In the seventies, the Bavarian industrialist Ludwig Kuttner took over Poseidon Gardens. With the help of architect Fritz Zollinger, Kuttner completely redesigned the gardens. In the years that followed, Poseidon Gardens became world famous, and began attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.
The eighties: Anton Staudinger
In 1984, Anton Staudinger – another Bavarian entrepreneur – took over Poseidon Gardens and continued to develop it further. After his early death in 1998, his wife Lucia Staudinger took over management of the company.
Since 2007: Lucia Beringer
In 2007, one of Anton Staudinger’s daughters, architect Lucia Beringer, took over management of the park. Together with her 130 employees, ‘La Signora’ has poured her heart and soul into the park since then. Her top priority is treating people, nature, and the environment with respect.

Our history

The myth of the Citara hot springs

According to one legend, the hot springs in the bay of Citara were formed by the tears of Venus Citerea, the goddess of love. Venus loved the beautiful young man Adonis, who was killed by a boar while hunting. Venus was so distraught by her lover’s death that she sailed to Ischia to mourn him. Her hot tears created a new spring, which the inhabitants of the island called ‘Citara’.

According to another Greek legend, the springs of Citara originated from tears of remorse cried by the giant Typhon after losing his battle with Zeus for control of Mount Olympus.

Regardless of whose tears created the hot springs, they are a gift from the gods.

The hot springs of Ischia

The healing powers of Ischia’s thermal waters have been recognised for over 2,500 years, and the ancient Greeks and Romans were well aware of its amazing effects. Since then, millions of people have sought and found healing and wellness on the island with the highest concentration of thermal springs in Europe.

Our philosophy

The holistic ‘Poseidon approach’

What makes a person healthy is not just being free from illness and ailments, but also that they live in physical, mental, and emotional harmony with themselves and the world around them.

Through the unique interplay of our thermal pools, the sun, the sea, and nature, a stay at Poseidon Gardens will provide you with a new sense of physical wellbeing, vitality, and mental balance.

Flora and Fauna

All of the plants in the park are typical representatives of ‘Mediterranean flora’, which emphasizes the strong link between the gardens and their magnificent natural surroundings.

We do not use any environmental toxins in maintaining the gardens. As a result, they have become home to a beautiful array of butterflies, bats, crickets, dragonflies, and all kinds of birds, which bring the gardens to life.

Environmentally conscious and plastic-free

For us, being environmentally friendly means using glass instead of plastic, sorting and reducing our waste footprint, signing agreements with our suppliers to take back packaging, sourcing biodegradable cleaning products, utilizing organic and natural fertilizers and pesticides, parasols made of natural raffia, tablecloths made of cotton, and saving energy with absorber technology, LED lights, and much more.

The Poseidon Gardens Spa has implemented an environmental quality management system in accordance with the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications.
